The Mid-Autumn Festival is a cultural highlight in Vietnamese tradition and is one of the major holidays during the year.

It is celebrated on the full moon of August (August 15th of lunar calendar).

There are many fascinating word-of-mouth legends about the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival such as: The story of the king walking on the moon on the Full Moon of August. The legend of Hang Nga and Cuoi, two friends living on the Moon, who will go back to earth on August full moon, to play with the children.

This festival is especially important for the children and the preparation of dragon masks, practicing the dance and drumming is the main activity during the long summer holidays in Vietnam.

On the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the family members prepare trays to worship their ancestors. Mid-Autumn celebrations include moon cakes, candies, sugarcane, grapefruit and other fruits.

Children will go out, play together and have parades with colorful paper lanterns. The best activity of the day is the lion dancer and dragon dancer. The “Lan Dance” are a symbol of luck, prosperity and is a blessing for every home.
